in turn and by turns

似たようなので、in turnがあるが、これはone after the otherの意味。

by turns : alternatively (交互に)
in turn: one after the other (つぎつぎと)

Consider a complex number Z, and define a function f(Z)=√Z. This complex function is a two-valued function, but one can make it single-valued by introducing the Riemann surface. For this purpose, the complex number Z should be regarded as Z=r exp(iθ), and one should follow the development of phase θ continuously. On every occasion when the phase crosses over the branch cut, the sign of the function should be inverted by turns (=alternatively).
